“You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.” -- John 5:39-40 NIV
We are wrapping up our More Than A Book series, where we’ve discussed practical ways to know Jesus. One last area that many overlook is this: giving to the poor.
Jesus spoke more about money and generosity than almost any other topic. He said, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40). Jesus directly equates serving the poor with serving Him. If you truly want to know Jesus, you must care about what He cares about—and He deeply cares about the poor.
Giving to the poor isn’t about pity; it’s about obedience and love. Proverbs 19:17 says, "Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and He will reward them for what they have done." When you give, you're not just helping people; you're touching the heart of God. It is a better investment to give than to receive. Jesus Himself lived a life of generosity. He healed the sick, fed the hungry, and served the broken. If we claim to follow Him, we must do the same. This isn’t optional. The early church understood this well: "All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need" (Acts 2:44-45). They knew Jesus personally, so generosity became a natural expression of their faith.
Here’s the truth: you can study the Bible, meditate, pray, and have fellowship, but if you are not generous, you are missing a key part of Jesus' heart. He was constantly giving, and we are called to do the same. If you want to know more than the Scriptures, you must decide to give to those in need.
The Bible's goal was not just to gain knowledge but to know Jesus. The Scriptures point to Him, but we must go beyond reading— we must live them out. Because at the end of the day, He is more than a book. So I beg you, my friend, to know more than just the book; know Jesus.
