After 40 days of prayer, fasting, and being tempted by the devil, Jesus emerges in the power of the Holy Spirit with a peculiar message. To set the scene, it’s the sabbath, and people are leaning in, intricately listening to what Jesus says as He preaches in the synagogue in Nazareth, His hometown. His ministry has somehow grown, although He hasn’t done a miracle yet; people are fascinated by what this soon-to-be hometown hero says.
As Jesus begins to preach, He opens up the scripture. We can argue that the whole Bible is about Jesus, the Word who became flesh and dwelt among us, so why would He pick two Bible verses out of the 23,145 verses in the Old Testament? There are roughly 574 Bible verses in the Old Testament about Jesus, so why pick only two? Jesus is trying to show us a valuable principle here, the principle of finding your prophetic scripture.
The Prophetic Scripture
The Bible is a prophetic book, and it was written with you in mind. The God that knew you before you were in your mothers womb, knew your destiny before you were born and left verse in the Bible to help guide you to your destiny. The question is have you found your verse yet? Have you found the verse you are called to fulfill? That’s what Jesus was doing in Luke 4:18-19; He was showing the people He found His verse. Jesus found His verse in the book of Isaiah, and He quoted Isaiah the most. This is not a coincidence. When you find your verse, you find your blueprint. When you find your blueprint, it makes it easier for you to navigate; you have a better sense of direction. There is nothing new under the sun; there is a scripture for you. It wasn’t until Jesus found His scripture that He started doing miracles. Oftentimes, the prerequisite of walking in your calling is to find your scripture. Have you found it yet? I’d prefer you know your scripture than your enneagram number or horoscope sign; the scripture is more important. Even King David knew this, that’s why he said I come in the volumes of the books written about me (Psalm 40:7). You should know it too, that’s why I’m writing this for you. It is important to note that your prophetic scripture does not have to align with where you are now. Jesus said in verse 21 “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” This was said before He ever opened up a blind eye in the scriptures. So when finding your scripture, be less concerned about where you are now and more concerned about what God has called you to fulfill. Additionally, finding your scripture isn’t limiting. Jesus did a lot more that what He said in the passages above. What finding your scripture does is help you find a baseline and a blueprint. Have you found your scripture?
